According to CDC researchers the 2016/17 season had "moderate" influenza activity with influenza A (H3N2) the most frequently reported strain. Influenza activity peaked in the middle of February 2017. Influenza B appeared to be the more common strain from March through May.
Regional differences were observed with the Western part of the US exhibiting activity one month earlier than the rest of the country. It was noted that overall the influenza vaccine reduced of influenza related medical visits by 42%.
The strains in the 2017/18 flu vaccine will be updated to better match circulating viruses.
